I’m going to show you how to do what looks like an I-cord design. This is one of my designs that I created, and it is called the Flipknit Beanie. I’ll have a link below, but I will show you how to get this kind of raised section here. It’s very simple—very simple to do this.

And let’s get started. I’ve got one kind of going, as you know, having to knit front and back, but I’ll show you how I achieve this little row here.

So let me get to the first one.

What you’re going to do is slip three stitches purlwise from the left needle to the right needle. Then you’re going to turn your work. You’ll see that your working yarn is over here on the other side, but you’re going to knit this first stitch now, that’s on this side, which is the third stitch that you slipped. So you’re going to knit that—or purl that. You’ll purl three. So that way it’s a knit in the front.

Then you’re going to turn your work again. Now you’ve knit these already, but purled on the back. Then you’re going to slip these back over because you have already done those.

So now we’re going to get to the next one, and I’ll show you again.

So now we’re at the next one. Again, we’re going to slip, slip, slip purlwise. Turn your work. Then we’re going to purl three, two, and three. Then we’re going to turn the work back. Now that you’ve already purled these, they are done. Slip those back over, and then you would continue around.

Now we’ve got to the next one. We’re going to slip, slip, slip. Turn your work. Purl, purl, and purl. Turn your work and then slip back.

You’re going to slip purlwise every time. That way, the stitches stay nice and straight. And that is how you create this lifted, kind of bubble look—kind of an i-cord look—to your fabric.

Just easy things that you can do make it so much fun. And that would be the result.
